The paper examines David Litchfield՚s author՚s picture books, which are defined as narrative artistic picture books. The interpretation is based on a contemporary approach in which linguistic and pictorial discourse are equal in presenting the narrative. Picture books are analyzed with regard to the duality of narrators and perspectives in them, according to the approach of S. Narančić Kovač, and the specificity of the author՚s expression is determined according to contemporary literary theoretical approaches to children՚s literature. For this purpose, two picture books in which Litchfield appears as an illustrator were additionally analyzed. The results of the analysis confirm the contemporaneity of the picture books due to the permeation of two discourses, the multiple purpose of the work, the layering of thematic frameworks, linguistic and pictorial playfulness, humor, symbolism, and the presence of citation and self-citation in both discourses. By analyzing the possibilities of David Litchfield’s picture books in encouraging socioemotional development, the educational adequacy of picture books in working with children of early and preschool age is confirmed.
