The subject of this graduate thesis is a spelling in the Croatian language in the first four grades in primary school. The introductory part shows the purpose of the work that emphasizes the importance and purpose of spelling in everyday life, or mastering the orthographic norm as a basis for further learning and improvement in all aspects of life. In the central part of the work, the basic features and types of spelling and orthographic norms are mentioned, the spelling principles are described with respect to the levels, spellcheck process, orthopedic exercises in classroom teaching, errors in the student's written work and evaluation accordingly, orthographic content in the classroom as provided by the Curriculum and emphasizes the importance of language games as methods of easier and faster adoption of spelling norms. The final chapters cover the empirical part, based on a network questionnaire for teachers in the Karlovac County area, data on the importance of literacy as a basis for lifelong learning have been analyzed, the existing Croatian spelling, the literacy of teachers and the use of language games as a method for mastering the language and its contents. The data were analyzed and processed in the SPSS Statistical Program (Kruskal Wallis test and Mann–Whitney U test).
